Mind expanding video about the Universe that we know (for now).

The Known Universe takes viewers from the Himalayas through our atmosphere and the inky black of space to the afterglow of the Big Bang. Every star, planet, and quasar seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. The new film, created by the Museum, is part of an exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe, at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010.

Flecken und Erreger verschwinden durch Sonnenlicht

Australische Forscher haben Wolle, Seide und Hanf mit Titandioxid-Nanokristallen versehen, die mit Hilfe von Sonnenlicht Flecken und Krankheitserreger entfernen. Das berichtet Technology Review in der aktuellen Ausgabe 04/08.

Das Geheimnis liegt in der stark fotooxidierenden Wirkung von Titandioxid: Unter ultraviolettem Licht erzeugt es Hydroxil-Radikale, die organisches Material oxidieren und abbauen. Die Kristalle sind auf den Textilien weder fühl- noch sichtbar. Den Stoff selbst oder die Haut greifen sie nicht an, sagt der Gruppenleiter Walid Daoud von der Monash University.

Die Reinigungswirkung von Titandioxid wird bereits in Sonnencreme, Malerfarbe, Fliesen oder Socken genutzt. Auf Wolle, Seide oder Hanf ließ sie sich (more…)
